Yackandandah Gold Excursion

A03 & A07: Tuesday 16th September
Students will visit Yackandandah Museum, Historic Gold Mines and participate in a gorge walk. Students are to be in full school uniform, bring lunch, snack and a drink. Please return permission form and payment to your child’s classroom teacher  by 11th September.

Prep Fairy Tale Ball

This term the Foundation students are learning about fairy tales in our Rich Project ‘Once Upon a Time.’ We will be celebrating our learning with a Fairy Tale Ball on Friday 19th September (the last day of Term 3). Students are asked to dress up as any fairy tale character and to bring in a plate of food to share at the ball. Ideas for food can be: Fruit (we can cut up in the morning), vegetables such as cut up carrots or zucchini, ham or other deli meats, dip & biscuits, cupcakes, chips, popcorn. If you find it difficult to get a costume please come and see us as we have some costumes we can lend. But be creative – make swords, crowns, capes etc.  If there are any parents that would like to help out in the morning before the ball please let your classroom teacher know. This may include setting up tables and chairs and preparing food. There will be no need for students to bring lunch on this day – there will be plenty of food. School will still finish at 2:20pm on this day.

Melbourne Zoo Excursion - Payment Plan

The junior school Melbourne Zoo excursion for students in Foundation and Years 1&2, is fast approaching, and will be held on Friday 14th November (A14-A16) and Friday 21st November (A10-A13).  A payment instalment plan is available with the first instalment of $15 due on Thursday 19th September. This should be sent to the school with a signed copy of the permission form. The second instalment of $20 is due by Friday 17th October. Final payment of $20 is due by Friday 31st October.  Wendy will not be accepting payments after 31st October. This is to allow time to re-confirm the bus and zoo entry. Students who have not paid the full amount by 31st October will not be attending. Full payment is $55. Unfortunately, due to the bus fare being costed across the whole Junior School, the amount of $40, is non-refundable.

SCHOOL DISCO – TOMORROW!!!  THIS FRIDAY 1ST AUGUST  IN THE MULTI-PURPOSE ROOM
JUNIOR DISCO (Yr P– 2) 4:30-5:30pm
SENIOR DISCO( Yr 3-6) 6-7:30pm 
ENTRY WILL BE $5 PER STUDENT  OR $10 PER FAMILY

The junior disco will be structured around action songs eg. hokey pokey, chicken dance, nut bush etc. The senior disco will be the traditional variety of top 40 songs (particular songs will be screened for appropriateness though!). Shane from Sedgies DJ Entertainment will be providing the music for both discos.

Melrose Munchies will run again making snacks, drinks and glow sticks available for purchase -

Lollies  50c per bag
Glow sticks 50c each or 3 for $1

Any parents who are available to work in the canteen (even if it’s for a half hour shift) please see me in A16

100 days of School

Wednesday the 30th July marks 100 days of school for 2014. This is a great opportunity to celebrate commitment to learning, participation, goal achievements and attendance. F-2 Students from A10-A16 will be asked to bring a collection of 100 'things' in the past we have had leaves, tea bags, paper clips, lego pieces…. It's up to you!

ANZAC Centenary Project

The Wodonga RSL Sub Branch together with the Defence School Transition Aide/Mentor Program (DSTA and DTM), are proud to bring you the ANZAC Centenary Project. Entries are open to all students (not just Defence students). Entries can be submitted by students from the Wodonga Region on a Centenary of ANZAC project, see entry form for all details. Lots of categories to enter; Primary / Secondary / Group entry. Prep entry - colour in competition, Years 1/2 entry - Colour in competition, Years 3/4 - design a postage stamp, Years 5/6 - Design  stamp, Digital presentation, Visual Art or Short story. There are lots of AMAZING PRIZES!!! First prize Primary is prize packs valuing $200- $500, First prize group entry is a GO-Pro for the School Library. Prizes will be awarded in Term 1 of 2015 at a dinner, by invitation at the Wodonga RSL. Major prizes for first place, encouragement awards to second place. Every entrant will receive a certificate sent to their Principal for presentation at school. Closing date for entries 1st March 2015. Please contact our Defence Transition Aide Janine Ramage for more information. Entry forms can be obtained from either Janine or the school front office.

Melbourne Zoo Excursion

Every alternate year, the junior students participate in an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo as part of our rich project curriculum. We have scheduled this excursion to take place in Term 4 over two weeks – A14, A15 & A16 Friday 14th November and A10, A11, A12 & A13 Friday 21st November. The cost of this excursion will be $55 per student. We are not asking for payment at this time, only advising of the intended excursion so that you can plan well in advance. A note will go home with your child (if they are in A10-A16) this week with the basic details, as well as a separate form to be filled out by those parents wishing to assist on the day. On this note you will also find the requirements for parents helpers. If you have any further questions or queries please do not hesitate to see me – 

EQ Corner - Being Aware of Learning Styles

Have you ever found it difficult to learn something new? Maybe the way it was being taught  wasn’t your preferred learning style. Everyone has a learning style or a preferred way of learning. The 3 main styles of learning are Visual Learners, Auditory Learners, and Kinaesthetic Learners. 

Visual Learners Learn through seeing. They need to see body language & facial expressions to fully understand the content. They tend to prefer sitting at the front of the room to avoid visual obstructions. They may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, videos, flipcharts and handouts. During a discussion, visual learners often prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information. Colour-coding notes and possessions help to organise their thoughts. Visual learners prefer written directions over spoken directions, and they visualise the spelling of words or facts to be memorised.

Auditory Learners Learn through listening. They learn best through discussions, talking things through, and listening to what others have to say. Auditory learners interpret the underlying meanings of speech through listening to tone, pitch, speed and other nuances. Written information may have very little meaning until it is heard. These learners often benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder. Written exams and directions should be delivered verbally for auditory learners, as they may have difficulty following written directions. Kinaesthetic Learners Learn through moving, doing and touching. They need a hands-on approach, and actively explore the physical world around them.

Kinaesthetic learners can find it difficult to sit still for long periods and may become distracted by their need for activity and exploration. They can usually assemble parts without reading directions, and computers seem to reinforce their learning through the sense of touch. Making models, role plays, lab work or anything that involves physical touching will facilitate their learning.  

Ask yourself the following questions and circle (V), (A), or (K) to help work out your own preferred learning style. 

1). When given written instructions on how to build something, I:
(V) Read them silently and try to visualise how the parts will fit together (A) Read them out aloud and talk to myself as I put the parts together
(K) Try to put the parts together first and read later 

2). To keep occupied while waiting, I:
(V) Look around, stare, or read
(A) Talk or listen to others
(K) Walk around, touch things with my hands, or move/swing my feet as I sit 

3). If I had to verbally describe something to another person, I would:
(V) Be brief because I do not like to talk at length
(A) Go into great detail because I like to talk
(K) Gesture and move around as I talk 

4). If someone were verbally describing something to me. I would:
(V) Try to visualise what they were saying
(A) Enjoy listening but want to interrupt and talk myself
(K) Become bored if the description went on too long 

5). When trying to recall names, I remember:
(V) Faces, but forget names
(A) Names, but forget faces
(K) The situation that I met the person, not their face or name

2015 Enrolments Due August 29th
